Posted on 11th December 2023 in News & Views

This festive season we’ve pulled together some of our favourite ways to decorate your home on a budget, get creative and have fun as a family at the same time.

Paper Chains

Recycle any old paper you may have in the house by creating paper chains, these simple yet effective designs work brilliantly at filling empty space on the tree or around the house. Paper chains are versatile and sustainable, easy and great fun to make even for the littlest hands They can be made from old wrapping paper, newspapers or magazines,

We love these easy to follow step by step instructions from the National Trust – https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/discover/crafts/make-festive-paper-chain-decorations

Lolly Stick Characters

Another cost-effective way of creating some festive decorations is to use ice cream sticks or wooden dowel to create wooden stars, snowflakes or even reindeer faces. These decorations are a fun way to get the whole family involved as older children can put their artistic skills to the test creating the stars and snoflakes and  younger children can have fun creating their very own Rudolph or Christmas tree.

These decorations can be hung anywhere from the Christmas tree to the mantlepiece with a simple bit of twine. There are some great ideas and a how to guide here on this great family friendly blog called Thimble and Twig – https://thimbleandtwig.com/lolly-stick-christmas-crafts/

Foraged Greenery

Foraged greenery is a stylish way of creating the festive feeling in your house for no cost at all. If you have a willow, holly bush or any firs or spruces in your garden or local park, you can take a few sprigs and use these to decorate your dining room table.

You can even use this an excuse to get the kids out the door and to the local park for some exercise, while looking for willow branches and firs, pinecones also make a great addition to the table decorations. Make sure you are foraging for natural decorations responsibly by following these helpful tips from the Woodland Trust – https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/blog/2022/12/foraged-christmas-decor/

Utilise Fairy Lights

Fairy lights are extremely popular and versatile as Christmas decorations but they don’t have to be used just on the tree or outside your home., They can be used inside in really inventive ways and to help add depth to the existing decorations already on display.

Fairy lights do not need to be hung in the traditional way and can be cascaded horizontally around the home to help create that festive feeling in every room of the house. Here are some other great ideas from Sparkle Lighting https://sparkle.lighting/blogs/fairy-lights/ways-to-use-fairy-lights
