Housebuilder Rippon Homes is offering its top tips to create a home library ahead of Share a Story month in May. Share a Story month aims to encourage parents and carers to read to their children and share the art of storytelling.

  1. Include comfortable seating – There’s nothing better than curling up with a good book in a comfy chair or sprawling out on a large sofa with enough room for two, so it makes perfect sense to incorporate great seating into your home library.

  1. Make the most of vertical space – As floor space is often limited, making the most of vertical space means you can fit more books into your homemade library, whilst also making your home feel tall, and giving the illusion of more space.

  1. Layer your lighting – While proper lighting is a key element in every room in your home, it’s especially crucial in a library. No one likes the struggle of squinting to make out words. Providing a proper lighting scheme, as well as the right type of light, is essential to the room’s ability to function the way you want.

  1. Artistic touches – To give your home office or book area that real library feel will take more than stacks and rows of books. Give your space a little extra personality by adding some art to the mix. For example, hang the artwork directly on the bookshelf, making everything part of the same display.

  1. Colour co-ordinate – While there are a variety of visually appealing ways to organise bookshelves, a colour-coordinated look never fails to make you want to read to your heart’s content.
